“Dontosai” is one of the most important winter festivals in Sendai. On January 14th, people go to shrine to burn their new year’s decorations in the fire called “Goshinbi” to pray for good health and prosperity of a year. The most famous Dontosai is held at Osaki Hachimangu Shrine. Osaki Hachimangu Shrine 大崎八幡宮
It is the most famous Dontosai and also the most popular one. People from all around Sendai come to either participate in the “Hadaka Mairi” or enjoy the big “Goshinbi”. It can be easily accessed from Sendai station by bus or train.
どんと祭の中で一番有名であり人気なのがこちら。多くの仙台市民が「裸参り」と「御神火」に参加します。仙台駅からバスまたは電車でのアクセスが便利です。

Sendai Toshogu 仙台東照宮
One of the oldest shrines in Sendai, going back to Date Masamune’s era. In here also the Dontosai is a popular festival. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy it at this important temple.

Takizawa Shrine 瀧澤神社
In downtown Sendai you can find several small shrines where there will be also happening the Dontosai Festival. Inside the heart of Honcho shopping district you can find a small Dontosai were you can pray and enjoy the festivities not far from the Sendai Station.
仙台の街中にある小さな神社でもどんと祭が行なわれます。仙台駅からも近い本町商店街の中心に位置する瀧澤神社では小さなどんと祭を楽しむことができます。

Atago Shrine 愛宕神社
At hills on the south side of Sendai Downtown is the Atago Shrine. Full of history and with a breathtaking view of the Sendai downtown, this shrine can give you a unforgetable Dontosai.

Mutsu Kokubunji Yakushido 陸奥国分寺薬師堂

Kamo Shrine 賀茂神社
In the heart of Izumi, between small forests and rice fields, this is the ideal place if you want to enjoy a quieter and less crowded Dontosai. It is quiet far from any stations so it is better to go by car.

Akiu Shrine 秋保神社
In the cold mountains of the west of Sendai, you can also enjoy the Dontosai festival. You can definitely enjoy a snowy festival with a big Gojinka in this Onsen town.

Takekoma Shrine (Iwanuma City) 竹駒神社 （岩沼市）
South of the Sendai Airport is the Iwanuma city. You can enjoy here the Dontosai on a local and less crowded way.
